Healing, Mothering & the Voice
Hi Friends,
I have always been passionate and inspired 3 things: Healing, Mothering and the Voice (both singing and speaking). Today I will “voice” into (and share what a couple wise others have said.) what it means to be a Mother. Let me back up a bit though. I do believe it is uncanny that we all have something in common. Well, we have a lot in common. Don’t you think it’s uncanny that we ALL have a Mother and a Father?? Now, we may not choose to BE a Mother or a Father, but I’ll betcha, a lot of folks are envious of our status as a Mother and a Father. I mean who gets to tell a child – “
“Do this, don’t do that; be this way, don’t be that way;
dress this way, not that way; eat this way, don’t eat that way. believe this way, not that way.” We had so much shoved down our throats! And, we sure swallowed.
When else are we in such control in the molding another life? OR are WE, as “parents” in control? Is NOT the other in control? Is NOT karma/dharma in control? Is NOT the Divine/Spirit in control? Is NOT Astrology in control? I garner to say, It’s probably a combo (and a lot more!) that is steering the ship(s). It is curious, mirror-like, fascinating, a wonder isn’t it..PARENTING, MOTHERING?
I’ve always been fascinated by this thing called “Mothering.” To me, “Mothering has always meant to nurture, to care for. One of the bennies I remember of my early Mothering days is it helped me to slow down! Cuddling and massaging my daughter seemed more important than anything else. Bringing peace to her (and mine) body, soul, and mind seemed paramount! Still is!
Not so much to offer Guidance, but that is in there too.
I felt to ask some of my close comrades who had “mothered”, whether they were Mom’s or Dad’s; what “mothering” means to them, focusing on the positive aspects (cause we’re in a culture which more than often focuses on the negative), the bennies, that they experienced in their day-to-day “mothering.” Here’s what they came up with
Here’s what Nicole said, mother of a 3 year old daughter.
Your capacity for love expands in ways you never imagined. You think you knew love before, but then you become a mother and discover a depth of love you didn’t even know existed.
You realize how much joy lives in the simplest moments. Picking flowers together, pushing her on a swing, holding her little hand. The ordinary moments become the extraordinary ones.
You get to be their safe place. The person they reach for when they’re scared, tired, sad, or simply need comfort. Being someone’s source of safety, love, and belonging is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever experienced.
And here is what Joanne said of bennies of being a mom, (mother of a 27 year old daughter).
You get to love someone more than you love yourself… in a healthy way. It takes you outside of yourself and the “package” of your own life and gives you a strength dedication; a cause that you would die for. It’s good for the ego. It’s good for the heart and soul. Also you learn more about your own core values, convictions and beliefs as you pass them along.
You get a new best friend … a relationship which grows only stronger and deeper as they grow older and wiser and more funny and dear.
You get a true sense of hope for the future and an investment in the future made out of your own flesh and blood. It embodies the sense that we are all
Connected!
Don’t you think all are good, all are valid?
Inner Child Work: Here is what a wise woman said about Inner Child Work: “Let us Live that dream life that we once knew as a child! And claim and be grateful for the many things you have NOW, that back in the day, you prayed for.You probably prayed about your dream career or perhaps you prayed to become famous or discovered, or you prayed about a dream relationship or your dream home…or or or…dream on! ‘
And I would add…”Dare to be different by embracing your differences, Heal yourself. Heal others. Let others heal you, especially let them catch you off guard. Don’t you like surprises???? PLAY!! Be wild. Be free!“
Here’s what another wise woman had to say: gotta say, I thought this was brilliant! on the Inner Child. This comes from Joanne Rand, whose daughter is age 27 (proudly, I shall say, she is a singer/songwriter and was my roommate when I came to New Mexico to attend massage school).
Joanne had this to say
“I’ve also written songs: letters to my inner child, which have been very helpful. An apology to my inner child and a mandate or encouraging prompt for her. It’s never too late to heal the inner child.”
Inner Child Resources: I also asked my comrades for some of websites, books and people who would be good to consult with around Inner Child work which I have not done some of. Here’s what they came up with:
Craig S. Barnes’s book In Search of the Lost Feminine Link here
Barbara Tedlock’s book: Woman in a Shamans Body Link here
Gabor Mate’s books Link here
Joanne Rand – her music is all good!
Granted a lot of inner child work, does focus on trauma, but so we can heal from that!!
